Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
Hi all ! To the readers that I still don't have, this is one of the classics in English literature that does get introduced in cbse curriculum in indian school. Although they only include an except and not the whole story, due to the sheer length of it. I had this in one of my school days too.
Now, during the occasional surf over the internet to read some comics, I came across a website that had a collection of illustrated classic novels. I am not sure if the site is legal, but it says these are classics illustrated a comic book series by Albert Kanter. The series ran from 1941 to 1971 producing 169 issues.
I knew I wanted to read the story and know the complete ending of the story.
The story begins by readers witnessing a family enjoying their holidays with a picnic. We gather that Victor the eldest son is inquisitive and loves chemistry. He has been given an opportunity to conduct experiments at a university starting the next day. There is his younger brother Henry, his soon to be fionce Elizebeth and his father.
As he finishes his journey to the university, he is met with the professors Krempe and Waldmen. The research and experiment begins to find something that can cure a human of any disease, but alas he ends up bringing a dead body to life. What is going to happen now ? what will be the purpose of this creature on earth ? how is it to navigate the world? Victor puzzled and horror stuck is in denial himself. Read this book to find what happens to Victor and his family will this unpleasant surprise.
I think this piece of fiction was way ahead of its time. In my life, I have come across countless movies having the same idea, presented in a different way. Be it a robot or an emperor from 100 years ago or people from future. So, bravo for concept. And coming to story progression, I felt that the depiction after the creature comes to life is presented with a rational thought. So, it's definitely not a life of roses for the poor creature and we empathise with on a lot of things. NO good looks, no kindness from people, being different in shape and form, people calling names. NO companion or friend, no goal in life end up with bad deeds and acts.
All in all, it's thought provoking for it's time and timeless for a reason. I would give it a solid 3 out of 5. Maybe if you can't sit to read a lengthy novel, you can go for this illustrated one. Untill next time !😊
