1984 - Big Brother is watching
Hi there! I hope you are doing well๐น. I picked up the task of reading this book, without giving it any thought, quite literally.. Me now->๐ค why do you do this to yourself. Anyways, this is a very popularly suggested books by people who enjoy psychological thriller/dystopian world/a bit of science fiction.
So, as you might know I enjoy none of those but we will get to my feelings later on.
The story revolves around a person named Winston Smith, he is a member of the party in Oceania. In the world of Oceania, the ruling entity/party is called the Big Brother. The whole of the population of Oceania are under constant surveillance by this party , all the time, every day, throughout your life i.e even when you are at home bathing, reading you get the point. Here normal people cannot have a thought of their own! This is actually considered abnormal. Our protagonist is definitely someone who would fall into the later category. Winston tries his best to make sense of the world and it's working around him, but his power for reasoning and logic don't support that.
This world is always under bombardment of bombs, the party making false claims and changing the records to back that up. Winston navigates his life as usual, until he finds a like minded women named Julia. From here, things quickly escalate, (but I don't know for some reason I felt like this kind of was forced into the story, and it came across like they were just friends with benefits) and what happens hereafter was quite frankly very disturbing for me to read.
The book is divided into 3 parts, and I almost kind of felt like giving up in second part, because it was moving slowly, and it was just ranting of the whole philosophy of the Ingsoc, and then reading the contrary so yes it became repetitive. Quite characteristic of George Orwell were it's not so happy ending, so I did not even hope for a happy ending and likewise the ending was not. ๐
On the positive note, this is quite thought provoking as this originally was written in 1948 but the idea of people fighting for power, rank and controlling every aspect of a human being in order to control them still prevails to this day. Be it internet being used for fake news, advertisement for setting body standards, fairness, cheap labour and so on... Thank you so much for reading, I hope this was insightful ๐.
